Dr. Farquharson is an associate professor in the School of Communication Science and Disorders. She directs the Children's Literacy and Speech Sound (CLaSS) Lab, which has a mission to help children with speech and language impairments achieve classroom success.
In one line of work, she examines child-level and item-level factors that contribute to speech, language, and literacy outcomes for school-aged children. In a related line of work, she uses implementation science frameworks to understand and work with school-based speech-language pathologists on their use of evidence-based practices. This line of work considers SLP-level and therapy-level variables, such as SLPs' self-efficacy, stress, job satisfaction, therapy quality, and treatment intensity, may impact the outcomes seen in children with speech and language impairments. Dr. Farquharson is a clinically-trained speech-language pathologist, a Board Certified Specialist in Child Language (BCS-CL), and an ASHA Fellow. She serves as the Editor-in-Chief for Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools (LSHSS). Her lab instagram has a popular weekly series called "Phonetics Fridays".
